Where have you been Amanda?

My lovingly created business Human To Human Counselling was shut down last year, from March 2025 to April 2026.

Why such dramatic action?

On 10 March 2025 I received a bowel cancer diagnosis.  I have talked about the whole experience on a recent podcast, episode 6:-

This is the medical explanation for the closure but what did this actually mean?

I knew I would not ethically be able to work therapeutically with my clients and I had no guarantee of my availability or my inner strength and ability to hold ethical boundaries to be a ‘safe’ and effective counsellor.

How could I book appointments when I didn’t know if I would be ‘ill’ or having treatment?  How would I know if my ‘stuff’ would leak through into sessions and would I be the person in the room with emotional overload?

So the safest thing for me to do was to shut down - and more importantly for my clients who deserved everything we are taught as counsellors.  It is the client’s session - they need a grounded person, who has safely worked through their emotional lives and issues, who can be there to offer enough availability to work through what the client needs - 2 weeks, or 24+ weeks of support.  It is a talking therapy but the emphasis is always on listening and being there wholly for the client.

I am pleased to say that Human To Human Counselling is now re-open and I am returning to work after cancer.  I have come back as the Cancer Therapist That Got Cancer.  I hope that there will be even more value and human to human connection between me and a client, knowing that no one is immune from cancer but now I truly and deeply understand not just the terminology of cancer treatment but the physical and psychological effects of navigating a diagnosis and the pain of treatment.

If I am not working with you because of cancer or chronic illness, I am here to offer a counselling and psychotherapy service that can explore mental well-being and all that it means for human beings to live well amongst anxiety, depression, loss, grief, illness and relationships.  Maybe you are a professional returning to work after cancer.

We’re all unique, our stories are ours, but there is a shared humanity in just staying alive and coping with the ‘gift’ of life.

Contact me if you have found meaning in this blog and you are thinking of entering into therapy.  Together we can recover your mental health.
